Effective July 1, 2014, the Mercury Thermostat Collection Act of 2013 requires that out-of-service mercury-containing thermostats be disposed of through an authorized mercury thermostat collection site. The Act also prohibits such thermostats to be disposed of through solid waste management facilities.
